Single-pass compilation makes the compiler fast; my Pascal compiler compiles itself (19.000 lines) in ca. 10 seconds. (And this runs interpreted on Windows, using a P-Code interpreter ...) On Hercules (CMS or MVS), it's about the same. There you have to add 3 or 4 seconds more for the P-Code to 370 translator. It's very easy this way to test new coding, because the turnaround times (compile, test, verify, change code, compile again, ...) are so low. And it's much fun. I couldn't imagine working on this, if a build of the compiler would take minutes or hours.
