Where I read:

          * Is compatible with the file format produced by the current
widely used gzip utility, in that conforming decompressors
will be able to read data produced by the existing gzip
            compressor.

Ironically, Linux "pax -wz", contrary to POSIIX supports gzip but not
"compress". Zz/OS "pax -wz" provides POSIX Congress but not gzip.
There were IP entanglements to "compress", but I understand the
patent has expired. Linux "pax -rz" will uncompress if it detects
that format. Linux "pax -r" does not recognize "compressed" format.
I believe "uncompress" never hat IP entanglements.
