Yes, other manuals are needed to do effective HLASM programming.
The POO is one of these other manuals.
So are the Assembler Services reference manuals and guide.
The Authorized Assembler guide and References.
DFSMS Using Data sets
Extended Addressability Guide
just to name some that come immediately to mind.
