I don't know for sure, but my guess is that when the architects
needed to come up with new conventions in the instruction
mnemonics for z/Architecture they tried to find some term which
could be used as a rationale for the use of a specific letter,
for example "Grande" for "G" meaning a 64-bit register, and
"Yonder" for the additional distance of 20-bit displacements.
There would have been a limited number of possible letters
available, and connecting the letter with a descriptive term
would help to justify a particular choice and make it easier to
remember and explain.

These terms are used informally as reminders of the relevant
terms but I've not seen them documented anywhere officially.
