I don't know for sure, but my guess is that when the architects needed to come up with new conventions in the instruction mnemonics for z/Architecture they tried to find some term which could be used as a rationale for the use of a specific letter, for example "Grande" for "G" meaning a 64-bit register, and "Yonder" for the additional distance of 20-bit displacements. There would have been a limited number of possible letters available, and connecting the letter with a descriptive term would help to justify a particular choice and make it easier to remember and explain. These terms are used informally as reminders of the relevant terms but I've not seen them documented anywhere officially. Jonathan Scott, HLASM IBM Hursley, UK
