This part of the numbering system I don't get...

Why not just make the release version 2.1.0, or even 2.0.1.0? Then minor
updates will simply increment the 3rd (or 4th) number. I see no need to
have a separate 3 digit set of numbers to denote the minor version.

Then the next dev branch will start at 2.2.0, and go as high as
necessary (2.2.9999?)...

Mozilla tried the 4 number versioning system once, then reverted to the
3 number version when it never actually got used.

Personally, I think the 3 number system just makes sense, and makes it
(much) easier to see what version you're on.

No biggie though - again, its only something to think about that I think
would eliminate a lot of confusion - but I'll use whatever you do... :)
