I have found the same results.

ClamsmtpD did the same thing when I was passing ingoing and outgoing
mail through it.  Messages in the exchange smtp queue were backing up
way too much.  After just routing incoming mail through it, and routing
outgoing directly through ASSP->sendmail.  I didn't have a problem.
Tests of sending incoming mail had next to instantaneous delivery to my
mailbox.

Obviously I still use another solution on my exchange server to protect
outsiders from any infections that could possibly occur here.

I am running a different virus solution, so i had to set up a
assp/clamav solution for testing. The performance hit is quiet big,
the cpu is going to be constantly at 99%.
I reduced the avbytes to 10k - that helped a bit. In my opinion, it is
subopt-solution.
