My MTA has hooks to allow command-line scanning of incoming emails and I've used several over the years. Sophos and F-Prot (both dos & 32-bit versions) were the best, but the processing overhead of starting up a dos box, running the exe and tidying it up afterwards, is significant - without considering the scanner itself. (When an add-on to directly use the memory-resident clamd came last year, there was a dramatic speed up and drop in CPU and memory used.
