Process 1 is ASSP, an excellent application with lots of support from Fritz.
It works well with Clam, but still can't decode UUencoded emails in the
version I am running. I don't know about the latest builds as I have been
too busy to test them. Therefore, I refuse to rely on only it. I prefer
the layered approach.

Process 2 is a proprietary AV gateway that we have been using for many
years. We are out of support on it but the signature files are updated
regularly. It does not have the best configurability but works very well
and does decode uuencoded emails. It catches very very few viruses.

Process 3 is hMailserver and as stated, I use it as an SMTP router. On a
lark I enabled it's ability to use the same ClamAV service that ASSP does
but it accesses it in a different manner. It seemed to catch additional
spams using ClamAV so I left it in place.

Process 4 is another incidence of the proprietary AV service running in a
reduced mode that does not do any AV scanning but merely bounces, yes
bounces, ZIP attachments with a specific error message to the sender. It
occasionally catches the odd zero hour virus but mostly catches legitimate
emails.

Our company policy is to not accept incoming ZIP's due to the potential for
viral content. We also do not capture those ZIP's for privacy reasons. So
we communicate back to the sender using process 4. Other exploited file
types are simply blocked by ASSP and process 1.
