I've had some experience with SmarterMail. It's not quite all it's cracked
up to be. Even running the Enterprise version, I had to wait until the
latest version (4.x, in January this year*) came out before the thing was
capable of making more than 4 attempts to send an outgoing message. That
necessitated an outgoing relay server to get over that problem.

Even with the latest version, it does not handle multiple IPs on a single
NIC, or multiple NICs, gracefully. It gets itself well confused about which
IP and which port it's listening to.

Having said that, version 4.x is a huge improvement on 3.x, but IMHO, has
some way to go before it's an "industrial grade" MTA.

* I see that a huge number of problems have been fixed in later releases.
Time to update my customer's version, I think.
