May be you try to set Ordered-Tie Hash Table Size

The number of entries allowed in the hash tables used by ASSP and
rebuildspamdb.pl. Larger numbers require more more RAM but result in
fewer disk hits. The default value is 5000. Adjust down to use less
RAM.


Or you disable the bombre check for testing purposes.
Or you disable viruscheck.

I am not able to test this, I am running BSD Unix (Apple Mac OS  X)
and see no freezes.
