Before I read this message I switched back from 1.3.3.1 to 1.3.3 and it looks like this version is more responsive.
The perl process still often reaches 100% CPU but does not hang the system completely it was with 1.3.3.1. I'm going to try 1.3.3.2 and post results after some observation.
