Give the choice I prefer a forum personally, information is easier to
organize and searching is usually more robust. Not to mention i don't
have to deal with annoying blacklists or email server hickups. However
the downside is i have to go to the forum to see messages, they don't
come to me (though these ones have RSS feeds for new posts, if you use
that).

But mail lists have their uses, long threads are easier to manage to a
certain extent, and usually communication is a bit faster.

If i were starting from scratch i would choose a forum, i think that
would hit the least common denominator for what most users are
comfortable with, however I'm working with what we already have.

Since the various cPanel integration products came out the forums have
seen increasing activity and have started to show their limitation,
sticky topics, moderation, better search, all things the old forums do
not have and the new ones do. (have you ever tried to use the sf.net
search? it's a bit odd to say the least.)

Many of the users on the sf.net forums will probably not use a mail list
either, it's just not as accessible for them, this is especially true if
it's just one-off question and they have no reason to stick around,
forums are easier for people to ask a quick question and get an answer.

I do agree that choosing only one would be easier but thats not an
option at the moment.
