For me, the answer would be support of the ongoing development efforts.  
I also prefer e-mail for user support.  I think it's a good idea to 
split development conversations from end-user support - so people who 
aren't interested in the one don't need to deal with them.  I also agree 
there shouldn't be too many lists - makes things difficult for everyone 
concerned.

I don't know what forum software options are available, since I have no 
interest in setting on up, but I know there are some that have 
integrated e-mail notification where you can mark threads of interest or 
choose to have all forum messages forwarded via e-mail.  As a user 
asking for help, or as someone who might be involved in answer those 
questions, I prefer receiving those messages via e-mail so I can process 
them along with all the rest of the messages of my day - instead of 
needing to visit one or more web pages to search for new postings.

Obviously, based on the requests for forums, someone has a different 
opinion.  For someone who just wants to ask a one-time question, like 
"why doesn't this feature work for me", forums have a place.  But for 
long-term involvement, I far prefer mail.
