I've been testing a "new" DNSBL for quite a while now; the list is the one exposed by "karmasphere" and called
karmasphere.email-sender.dnsbl.karmasphere.com (web site http://www.karmasphere.com/) it can be used as any other RBL (spamhaus, etc...) at first I configured a low-traffic MX to use it (on ASSP) to experiment a little w/o causing trouble to users; then after some months of testing, I decided to add it to the RBL list on one of the "bigger" ASSPs; it has been working since latest July now and all I can say is that it works well and till now I had no "false positives" Sure, the list isn't alone (I'm also using zen.spamhaus and some others) but grepping the log files to count the RBL rejections I found that the two lists which catch most spam are "zen" and "karmasphere" The interesting thing about KarmaSphere (KS) is that it's not just another RBL but it uses a "reputation system" whose details can be found here http://www.karmasphere.com/devzone/docs/overview http://www.karmasphere.com/help/concepts now, while the approach used can't cover you 100% it's still rather effective and helps a lot (imVHo) avoiding false positives due to "too aggressive" listing; it's also interesting to notice that KS can do more than just work as a DNSBL since, using the KS "interface" in place of the DNSBL one a spam filtering program may obtain much more informations and data; also, the KS is open to contributors, this means that a given "spam filter" (ASSP :D ?) may eventually have built-in support for KS and each running ASSP may contribute to KS for more details, see http://www.karmasphere.com/devzone/ http://www.karmasphere.com/devzone/client/ (notice that there's a Perl module available too ;-D) I'm not suggesting to modify ASSP (although it may be interesting) but at least to give KS a spin using it as a DNSBL; maybe the results will be of some interest ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
