Might want to look for distros that have ASSP package and actively
maintained. I maintain the ASSP package on Gentoo Linux. But one surely
free to use any distro. I don't care if people run Gentoo or not :)

Nothing wrong with it. Regardless of distro most all of your apps will
be the same. It's which ever you personally prefer. Also which one you
can easily get support for. Either local support, on staff, paid, free,
etc. All based on your needs.
