I believe nothing beats debian stable for ease of maintenance and 
stability. Many critisise debian for not being as up to date with its 
stable release. But that is one of its strong points. It's not called 
stable without reason. Ubunbtu is fine but based on debian unstable.

I have worked with many distros, amongst which redhat and linux from 
scratch. And debian so far worked best for me. Linux from scratch is 
nice if you want to learn how linux works. But requires a lot of free 
time. ;-)
