Hi Charles, Time keeping inside a virtual machine can be more challenging than in the physical world, atleast if you don't know how to deal with it. People are generally having timing problems if you have a cpu with variable cpu speed (on the hosted products (VMware Workstation, Player & Server)) or is using a 1000Hz smp linux kernel inside the virtual machine. For windows guests there is also a similar effect if you're providing streaming services that installs a multimedia timer. Normal windows HALs are however using a 100Hz timer.
The challenges involved with time keeping are described in good detail here: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmware_timekeeping.pdf The most common solution is to sync the clock with the pit and use vmware tools as per the timekeeping doc refered above. For a more accurate clock you can also use the descheduled time service: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_esx_vmdesched.pdf http://download3.vmware.com/vmworld/2006/tac9710.pdf Other resources include: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2189 http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1591 <- workaround for cpus with variable speed http://vmfaq.com/?View=entry&EntryID=13 Lars -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Charles Marcus Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2008 12:44 PM To: Questions and Answers for users of ASSP Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy Subject: Re: [Assp-user] Exchange 2007 and ASSP On 4/16/2008, Kevin ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote: > Almost all of my ASSP installs run inside a virtual machine, it works > very well. I haven't used VMWare, but have heard this is one of the big problems with the free versions... -- Best regards, Charles ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by the 2008 JavaOne(SM) Conference Don't miss this year's exciting event.
