both dig and nslookup give correct results, my /etc/hosts first line is

127.0.0.1 galena.iucr.org galena localhost.localdomain localhost loghost

my nsswitch.conf says

hosts:  files dns

I've run dnswalk and its thinks things are OK, I'm stumped at the moment.
