Here's something I didn't try (yet) but which I'm planning to test in a
(hopefully) short while

The idea is to pick a VIA pico-ITX board
http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/spearhead/pico-itx/ add a flashcard
and a laptop HD to it (SSDisks are still too expensive or they'd be the
ideal candidate); stuff a minimal Linux or BSD distro on the flash (for
booting) and then install ASSP, ClamAV and all the other stuff on the
disk (to avoid flash wearout); the final result will be a micro
appliance with no moving parts (ok, almost, the HD will still spin, but
if SSD prices drop enough it will really become a no moving parts
critter) and all the needed stuff to filter and route emails

The purpose is to test the feasibility of a "drop-in" box for use in
(relatively) small networks; in such a case all one will need to do
would be connecting the network interface (possibly to the DMZ),
accessing the ASSP web admin, configure ASSP for the local
networks/domains and have it humming along; some kind of "turn key"
antispam solution; the main advantage of such a critter would be the
ease of installation and management, so even not-so-skilled people could
be able to have it up and running in minutes and benefit from first
class spam filtering :)

About the final "layout"; the current idea is to place the ASSP and
clamav "binaries" on flash and then setup some "mount points" so that
the heavily accessed folders (e.g. clamav sigs, assp spam/notspam ...
and others) will be transparently redirected to the HD; this to allow
some more "crash safety" while avoiding quick flash burnout

Now, my questions are: is there any better (and possibly cheaper)
alternative to the VIA board ? And also, which O/S and which Perl distro
(if not the native one) would you pick as the platform of choice for
such a setup ? Any suggestion about alternate setups or hints/ideas ?

TIA

PS: some time ago, I also proposed the creation of an ASSP "virtual
appliance" (i.e. a VM containing a minimal OS, Perl, an SMTP relay,
ClamAV and ASSP); I didn't abandon that idea and I think it's still a
valid one since it will allow anyone to have a fully configured ASSP
with all the needed modules and stuff in place; I'm just exploring the
above as an alternate solution which may help covering some slightly
different needs

Season greetings to all :) !
