I would recommend the following:
1. Get a hold of any number of free virtualization softwares out there,
ie. Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 Sp1, VMWARE Server, etc... And install it
on a pc/server that can support it for a while, while you run tests.
2. Install your current Opsys on the Virtual PC.
3. Install the latest Perl on there.
4. Copy your Current ASSP folder there.
5. Run the Perl Module installer script.
6. Copy the new version of ASSP on top of your current ASSP.
7. There will be files that you have modified to your liking (most
likely). You should note these files and copy the stuff you've added to
them to the new files that you just copied from the new version of ASSP.
8. In the assp.cfg file you will need to change IP Addresses if you
have hard coded them, ie. SMTP Listen Port and Relay Port. If it is
running as a service or a daemon, you should make that zero also.
9. Start ASSP from the command-line.
10. Test away!
11. Once you feel confident enough, redirect your port 25 from your
current 1.2.6 ASSP to your new temporary server and allow email to flow
through it.
12. Once you're confident that things are working as they should, you
can remove the v1.2.6 ASSP off of your production server, upgrade perl,
etc...and copy ASSP from your Virtual PC back over to your production
server. Change the IP Addresses back and the run as service/daemon
option. You should be all set.

I know it's a lot of steps, but it is a safe way to do it. Should
something not work, you're not down the creek without a paddle.

Kind Regards,
Brett
