Michelle's (SORBS owner) actual reasoning for charging you is (as she stated on usenet) that you cost alot more money than 50$ generating unwanted traffic to systems that received your spam, and should be made to pay for that.
I think you guys are looking at this the wrong way. The list just publishes some IP's it's not forcing anyone to use it, nor forcing you to pay. You can think it's ridiculous and what-not that's your right, but we can't impose on anyone else what criteria they use to block mails. If some people want to use it in the way "no e-mail for a year from you if you sent spam in the past" - well that is the right, and if they want to block you then it's their choice not yours...I find it funny many people blame the list, and not the list's users :) when the latter are the ones doing the actual blocking! Otherwise, what do you suggest? For you or me to make an acceptable policy for every public list? What about private ones? What if someone else has different ideas then and think *that* is unacceptable? I'm not defending their policy in any way, but I think anyone has the right to publish whatever list they choose, if it sticks to their stated criteria.
