With old v1 and no body checks (uribl and clamav for virus and additional antispam body check where on a different internal server) I used to process 1 million+ connections without particular issues, on what now you'd call a slow computer with limited resources. But this was many years ago, when assp was lighter. Only issue was that I had to use a fast caching resolver in the lan. Did you research haraka?
