backscatter is basically defined as any type of response e-mail which is undesired, which includes (imho) vacation/away notices, as long as we've done our best to notify they are not wanted.
in our case, all of our transactional mail goes through an alias which is monitored - that is, if you reply to one of our transactional e-mails, it will reach a support person. you can probably guess how bad that looks when you factor in automatic responses, but it's still important to us that manual replies be handled. we have an automated system that tries to detect automatic responses and discard them, but it would have been good really to have something block this. this works also for no-reply/noreply aliases which are used by other companies - these mails are not wanted and thus backscatter.
