Esteemed Colleagues:

According to my ASSP logs, someone connected today to my computer on
port 25 (which is the only port on which ASSP listens), and then sent
a STARTTLS command. ASSP sent the command to Postfix, and Postfix
rejected it with an appropriate message ("502 5.5.2 Error: command not
recognized") and ASSP terminated the connection.

This is, in a sense, the right thing to do, because even if my Postfix
accepted the STARTTLS command (it does not), port 25 is not the
appropriate port on which to send it; it should be sent to port 587
(which would not have worked either, since nothing on my computer is
listening to port 587 [or to port 465 either, for that matter]).

Is there any good reason, however, for not honoring STARTTLS on port
25? If there is not, is it possible to configure ASSP in such a way
that ASSP can handle encrypted traffic in a way that is transparent to
Postfix, so that ASSP decrypts incoming traffic, when necessary, on
its way to Postfix, and encrypts outgoing traffic, when necessary, on
its way from Postfix, so that port 25 can handle both unencrypted and
encrypted connections, although Postfix is configured to handle only
unencrypted connections?

Please note that I am asking for your opinions, not only about whether
(and how) this is technically feasible, but also about whether it is
advisable. As always, thank you in advance for any and all replies.
