I did start there.  Some how the $'…' is not recognizing the \b as backspace 
character to start/end bolding.

It is a quoting problem and I don't see where I'm going wrong.  I've not used 
the $'…' quoting mechanism before.

 

USAGE=$'
...
 \bipsum\b '\b'dolor'\b'
...
'


produces


...
\bipsum\b bdolorb
...
