Ok, forget 50. How about 5? That's $100 per user. Would a software do that?

IF yes, then why isn't it scalable to 50, when the underlying asterisk is?

No kidding.  $10/user will (should) not get you much...  Remember, even 
with Asterisk based products, you get what you pay for.
