In fairness to the OP, he did say "Essex-based", and looking at his website, it looks like they're in Romford, which is (just about) sufficiently far outside London that £30k is probably feasible.
However, Alex has hit the nail on the head here. It's very difficult to find anything to rent in London (even a room in a shared house) for much less than £400/wk, so £30k per annum (let's assume that's around £22k after tax) really doesn't go very far.
