Just as an example I have just put an ISDN system up a few days ago.. I am still in the process of getting my head around it but it terms of hardware and software I have used chan_capi and a passive AVM PCI card that I picked up off Ebay here in the UK for 4.20..
So far I have just got it to the point where I am able to make calls and have not had the serious echo problems that everyone warns about when using a passive card.. This is a very cheap way to get a system up and running and to get your head around it.. Then after that you can move on to the more expensive PRI/T1/E1 type systems.. The AVM passive card was suggested to me by Kapjod (The creator of chan_capi.) and it was really good advice.. I have a system now that has cost me very little to setup but is fully functional.. Also I don't know what the availablity of these cards is in the US.. I'm sorry but can't answer you questions about DID.. I am still learning.. :) Later.. > I want to test asterisk with its DID functions on a smaller scale without the > expense of a PRI.
