It's now almost 2 hours later and the device has been spitting out the error messages documented in my earlier posts. The S100U is it seems now at a "stabilized" heat level. It is not uncomfortably warm but feels like a transformer you might have plugged into the wall.
It felt warmer fairly soon after I modprobe'd the wcusb driver, around 20 minutes.
