Can we apply this only on ONE register=> connection, but not as a default? That would be done
not in [general] but in a [hostname] section of sip.conf.

Indeed, sip.conf needs a major overhaul to handle this and quite a few other tricks that the more 'advanced' users require. See the thread I started some time ago that died out very quickly:
