I was expecting a more elegant answer to the "9 to dial out"
problem with
the Polycom 501. Sure I can change my dialplan, but that means I
have to
adapt my dialplan to the phone, while the opposite seems like the way
to go.

It will not.
either add to your contact entries, or
alternatively have your dial
plan add 9 to any exten longer than say 3
digits
