Don't understand quite well why you say that...
Because the DTMF decoders and FAX modems work over a very wide range of
signal levels. If you need to boost the signal to bring it within their
operating range it is something very very weak, which will be noise and
highly distorted when boosted. If changing gains seemed to help you, it
was probably just a quirk. If you suggest to people they should try
changing gains, you just create more support hassle for people like me.
From the audio files I have received it is clear that many Asterisk
systems are operating with crazy gain settings that cause massive
distortion of anything but the quietest voice.

removed completely from Asterisk, support issues would decrease
