Thanks Shaun, but I'm not sure I understand everything you wrote...I can understand that blaming Asterisk might be a Linux error, but it still doesn't explain what does make the CPU usage shoot up like this.
I am using 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 (64 bits, CentOs), Asterisk 1.6.2.13 and DAHDI Version: 2.3.0.1 Echo Canceller: MG2. On that server I have a 4-port PCIE PRI card and a TCE400B card. A few hundred SIP peers, but nothing 1.4 couldn't handle easily (same server).
