Take a look at High Availability ASTerisk (HAAST) from www.generationd.com Their software sits between the OS and asterisk, and can failover servers, switch IP addresses, control external interfaces, etc. It can run on different hardware (make a cluster from different/cheap boxes), it allows long distance seperation of cluster members, etc. Also, it's easy to install.
