This has been discussed before: http://lists.digium.com/pipermail/asterisk-dev/2004-February/003052.html
Basically, a handler for the MESSAGE and INFO messages would have to be written and they would have
to utilize Asterisk's registration data and then "proxy" these messages instead of terminating them. Right now,
Asterisk works as a SIP B2BUA so one call is actually 2 different call legs with Asterisk being common to both.
The above messages must be relayed from one call let to another. The INFO is needed so you can get those nice
"Hal is typing..." messages at the bottom of your messenger window.

Thanks for the quick, if not very detailed answer. Obviously I am interested in this capability, is there some reason we couldn't work on this? I believe SER might support it (it seems to work between FWD clients at least), why not asterisk? What would be required to implement this functionality? Anyone?
No.I've successfully installed Asterisk and have Microsoft's Instant Messenger connecting. We can make VoIP calls between clients without a problem, however we cannot send text instant messages between clients. From what I can tell this should be possible using IETF SIMPLE or RFC
3428(SIP Message Extension). I can't find any reference to this and
asterisk.
Is it supported?
