Andrew,
I'm using a no name BT Dongle I got from FactoryDirect for CA$20 (part
BL1102), it's BT1.2 compliant. I bought it along with a $40 BT headset
to do some experimenting and testing with PlutoHome, just haven't had
the time to install and play with it yet.
So threw it on the laptop ( XPPro). The initial negotiation took me a
while to master, the dongle has it's own drivers and software (
BlueSoleil ). And when the headset is on it is on, since with the laptop
it is acting just like another sound device. I've never experienced any
scrambling or screaming. I do get static once I get about 8-10 feet from
the laptop, and it progressively increases as you get further away.

What do you have for a BT dongle? The Linksys BT101 seems to have an issue
with XP and 2k where if the headset comes and goes, you have about a 50%
chance of having your transmitted audio "scrambled". (the other side
describes it as a full-volume constant screaming into the headset noise. Not
pleasant.) I've used the Motorola HS810, 850 and the Treo-branded headset
and they all do this, so that is why I'm suspecting it's the dongle. The
only way to clear it is to pull the dongle out and put it back in, and you
have normal transmitted audio again. It's using the Linksys-provided BT
stack, not the XP-provided one (the XP one doesn't seem to work with the
dongle).
I just downloaded and am testing the IdeFiskIAX softphone, seems pretty
good also, nicer GUI then DIAX! Both of these apps are less then a meg
in size.
yes DIAX is pretty decent, albeit butt-ugly. Mind you I like its interface
far better than xlite. Good lord do I hate skinned applications!
