Yes, ntpdate or rdate at boot followed by NTP would be appropriate on a
machine whose local clock is gone so it isn't spending days coming up to
speed.

Try using ntpdate to set the time first, then start the NTP service. I
find sometimes if it has less of a skew to correct it's much happier.

I have it set up but it didn't synchronize properly at first. I was
getting a lot of
"set_rtc_mmss: can't update from 59 to 9" or similar messages still,
which is annoying when you're trying to look at the * console. The last
boot seems to be fine though. ntpstat says its synchronized now. Is
there some sort of trick to get the synchronization working when you
first set up ntpd?
