Greetings, I've been running asterisk on Fedora Core 4 for a while now and have gone though several asterisk upgrades using yum and the atrpms repository. If you have centos, you can point it to the RHEL4 repository a "yum install asterisk" in about 5 minutes. The only manual thing you will have to install is freepbx since it assumes the same owner of the apache web server is the owner of asterisk, so you need to set some group permissions.
I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my server on new hardware and using Ubuntu, I've been a big Ubuntu fan for almost 2 years on my desktop, and now it looks like they finally have a good server as well.
