With Linux kernel 2.6 you don't even need a (UHCI) USB-port.
The zaptel dummy driver, providing timing, is using the hardware clock
for timing.

As far as I remember you don't need timing at all for hold music.
I could be wrong.

Depends what you are actually doing with asterisk, since as far as I
know you only need timing sources for meetme and on hold music...
