Hi, I've done a bit of work on this, so I'll post my thoughts.
Firstly, E-mail to Cell phone gateways are severely crippled if you're using Rogers based services. They require you to "reply" to incoming messages to read the messages. This means that you get charged for an outgoing message. The ultimate solution is to us a TAP gateway, and TAP based software, such as Send page. Sendpage will handle SMS and Alphanumeric pages, and works with just about all providers. I have been using this for Network monitoring, before sendpage we used to get a SMS message saying we had an e-mail, and could reply to read the message, where as now we receive the entire message. For Asterisk to catch the incoming digits, you could either use the Caller ID, or prompt for digits. Once you have this information, run a system command to send the SMS message. To connect to a TAP system, you will need a analog modem (I bet you can use a FXS device) to communicate. How easy would it be to have the * server send me an alpha page of the caller's number when someone leaves me a voicemail? I would imagine there would have to be a delay when the paging switch answers so that * waits for the IVR prompt to finish so it can send the digits. Is this something that has to be invented from scratch? There aren't too many alpha pagers in use anymore so it may not be a priority for anyone else. I think I have the public paging port number so I can get it to send a complete message, but I don't want to take the chance of tying up the port.
