I think this is a common misconception that the large telecom companies
have been successfully spreading. Certainly they have convinced the
current government.

Deregulation of VoIP means that the telcos are now able to market an
access independent VoIP product free from CRTC regulation. Make no
mistake, this will have a huge negative impact on VoIP providers.

In practical terms it means this: When a VoIP provider wins a new
customer they first have to go through a number porting process to move
the customers number. Telcos are now free to call the customer and offer
them huge discounts to prevent them from switching.

Just as the CRTC said in its original ruling, telcos will use VoIP as a
loss leader to maintain their customer base.
