Hi guys, Hopefully not too off topic for this list.
I bought a Linux based dual voip/gsm phone from www.parawireless.com. Unfortunately, it turns out the Linux OS on it, is a highly "proprietary" version and so developing custom applications for this phone is not possible. That is the reason I am getting rid of this phone. It was bought in december, is still under warrantee (and only my grandmother made a few calls on it) It is the Parawireless Hipi-1100, which is identical to the Hipi-1200 listed here: http://www.parawireless.com/hipi.htm Except that it does not support 802.11g or WPA (but does do 802.11b and WEP) I have successfully used the phone with sip providers, and asterisk / trixbox. The GUI needs getting used to. The GSM bootup with my FIDO sim takes 2 minutes for some reason, but it works. Other networks in Europe worked much faster. The sip client works surprising well, and I've had no echo cancelation problems. It worked better then Skype on a Windows Mobile 5 phone. Note that there is no keypad (it is aimed at the Chinese market) but it comes with a touchpad and a stylus. Roaming through various wifi networks is possible but difficult due to the GUI, so this might become easier in the future with a firmware update. Using it at your home wifi is however very easy and reliable. If you want more information about this phone, next month's TASK meeting I'm giving a talk about secure voip with Leigh Honeywell where we will discuss what we know about the firmware layout of this phone. If you are thinking about a Linux phone to hack on, this is not your phone. If you just want a (reasonably cheap) dual voip/gsm phone, it works pretty well. If you are in downtown Toronto, I'm willing to demo the phone for a coffee. Please contact me off-list if you are interested, Paul
