They do it by way of using the cell phone as a modem. They don't actually carry the squeaks and squaks over the codec. Data "minutes" do not count as call "minutes" so no, your callback idea won't work. I use my Telus phone in tethered mode all the time with my laptop to access the internet when I'm out of normal internet range. Bluetooth rocks for this, as there's no cables. -A.
