Just a side question since you mentioned about your job status, how much can a Asterisk consultant make on average?
I'll be brief because this is a bit off topic. Short answer, I don't know. Asterisk wasn't my primary business. I was doing IT Management consulting and occasionally a customer needed an IVR or small PBX solution and I deployed asterisk. For a skilled professional with experience in Linux, Asterisk, LAN/WAN etc I would think one could expect to pay anywhere from $100-$200/hr and even up from there depending on specific expertise. I don't think they are very demanding in the market, but I could be wrong.
This gets to how many hours one could expect to bill. My sense is that there are significant opportunities. Just look at all the old Meridian systems that haven't been upgraded to Succession. You could probably buyback the Nortel stuff and put in Asterisk for 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a Succession upgrade. The trick is that a bit of salespersonship (awk?) is required. Sorry for the business talk. Mea Culpa. Dave
