That's an interesting observation about the mic input on laptops. I just
took for granted that it was a stereo input. Now that I think of it, I've
never tried to put a stereo signal into the mic level input.
What you will see is that the Mic input is indeed a stereo plug, but...
Sleeve = Gnd
Ring = Phantom power (current limited, in case you inserted in a mono plug)
Tip = Audio
There _are_ other devices out there (such as the Griffin iMic) but
they ususally accept only, either a stereo line in, or a mono mic in.
BTW. The iMic also doesn't provide phantom power (that most of these
microphones seem to need these days). Or your back to stocking
batteries, just in case, and that then ups the 'less gear' mantra
again, and avoids the conversation:
"hold on, I have to change your batteries,
and then can you please start over again"
If you want to move up the food chain, then other devices are
available starting at (ISTR) $200 and up, but that was more than _I_
wanted to spend on a good will project. :-(
