I too am in Calgary, so I understand where you are coming from....
If you want to learn more and get the face to face that I think would be
most useful, then I would suggest you come down to the local Calgary
Linux Users Group (CLUG) - they hold meetings on the first Wednesday of
each month at DeVry. They are a friendly knowledgeable group of people
who would probably be able to help you out with some of the information
you are looking for.

I don't know how many people in CLUG are familiar enough with Asterisk,
but if you're interested, we provide Asterisk consulting services here
in Calgary and could probably help on that side of things.
