As long as the phones and/or the switch is set to operate at only 10Mb I
don't see why it wouldn't work.

Some CAT3 cable used for telecom only has 3 pairs. So that might affect POE
delivery if your source only supports Mode B.

what I can see, PoE is supported on Cat3

I'm reviving an old thread here.

Jim,

Did you ever go ahead with Voice and POE over Cat3 project?

Someone wired my office with Cat3 only 2 years ago. (sigh) Now I'm
stuck with the decision to choke my gigabit LAN back to 100Mbps and
use the switch that's built into the Aastra phones, or leave the data
network alone and put new jacks on the Cat3 voice runs and use that.

I can't see anything wrong with the theory here. We all used Cat3
networks for our networks 15 years ago. 4 pairs should easily suppor
POE. If I used the Cat3 cable, I'd lock all the devices down at
10mbps just to avoid pushing the limits of Cat3. Using the Cat3 would
give me the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have an isolated
network for voice.

The unspoken third option is to rip it all out and put in new drops.
Unfortunately, it's not in the budget.

I'd be glad to hear about anyone's experience with a setup like this.

Thanks in advance,
Dave
