Hello Bruce,

Sounds like the system has a stock set of kernel.org kernel source files. Before you can use this kernel you need to flavour it with the CentOS config files...this is more trouble then you want to deal with so I would recommend that you use Yum to download and install the correct , flavoured files.

Try running "yum install kernel-devel-$(uname -r)", this should grab the exact headers for your kernel....doesn't always grab the right ones so let me know if this doesn't work for you.
