Thanks for the responses. Cisco seems to fare a little better than I expected. Doesn't their SIP support require extra licensing fees per line or have they dropped that now? I understood it was their proprietary protocol they were pushing. Therefore, you would have to use their phones.

In terms of remote access, I was thinking of the ability to resell extensions or server-to-server for client use. Barring all of the CRTC issues, would this be cost effective at all?

Hi Guys:

Cisco VOIP. Is it a good platform for an eight station call centre and three station message service? Just looking for some opinions to defend Asterisk with. I gather that SIP phones are out due to licensing cost. They would probably lose the ability have remote clients connect to the switch at a reasonable cost as well. Am I missing anything? Flexibility is probably out the window....

The Cisco product is very nice. It has a lot of stuff "out of the box"
that asterisk doesn't have.

Remember Asterisk is more of a tool box; everything is possible but it
often requires a lot of work and maintenance to get it there.

Without starting a troll war; I'd recommend Cisco over the various
Asterisk solutions in a lot of cases. However, that's a bit like saying
I'd recommend a Cadillac (or whatever) over building your own car from
parts.

If your pitching Asterisk then it's price where you have the advantage.
For one thing it does not scale as well. Like a traditional PBX you add
phones in "blocks" rather than one at a time as needed with Asterisk.

BTW, a few of the responses to this thread regarding Cisco are
inaccurate.

Cisco is:

- Flexible: It supports scripting and lots of things.

- SIP: It supports SIP including SIP trunking and SIP phones.

- Remote Access: Of course it supports remote access. Why would the
phone system care where you are connected from? That's a networking
issue.

- Separate network: It does not require a separate network. In fact it
is tailor made to be run in a converged network and will even control
and configure your switches for you to create VLANs and QOS etc.
