I am not sure of the option in Caledon, but some low/no service areas have some low end wireless networks that locals have setup and over time took off... radios on grain silos, etc... So you may want to look around to see if any farmers in the area have radios on the silos and ask them (or start your own).
If someone in line of site has access, you could beam it over from there yourself (pay for the connection/power). Keep in mind you may need permission from the ISP to do this... if you get caught, etc... Also standing on the roof with an iPhone (or other 3G capable internet phone) and seeing if you can get access to the internet. iPhone is nice for this since you can test the performance. With a new Windows Mobile, you will see what the connection is a little easier. But basically, speed test. If you can get a good signal and speed, all you need is a 3G USB stick (or tether an iPhone)... out of the metro area, it appears to be pretty capped at 2.5Mbit Down max... I have seen it go to 5Mbit downtown. Rogers has released their 25Mbit network in the core as well... I imagine that is going to be going out to the rural areas over the next few years... north of Kingston and up in Mount Albert we are seeing 2.5Mbit. In the Mount Albert case, we barely saw a signal and got slow speed (but 3G) on the roof. Installing a signal booster and antenna on the roof, then hooking up a 3G Router (takes the 3G USB Stick) brought in a very strong signal with no performance problems (2.5Mbit). This is for a family of 5, kids in high school... xbox players, etc.... rarely do they go over the $50-60 / month fee.... Rogers does CAP at $100... so the most you will get billed is $100. They are ex xplorer sat users and say it is Way, way , way better than sat... actually usable (as others have stated, capping, slowdown to dialup... bloody robbers if you ask me). As well, Bell and Telus are releasing iPhones in November... and I imagine their new networks shortly throughout Canada... Looking for some information, and this was the first place I thought of. My sister lives where there is no DSL or Cable in Caledon, but looking to help her get high speed running. The Rogers/Bell consumer sites have very limited plans. Needs to unlimited or say 30GB, not one of these 3-5GB deals. Any one aware of any unlimited/hi vol plans out there running on WiMax/EVDO ?
